چکیده

In this paper we study the properties of vortices in two dimensional quantum antiferromagnets with spin magmitude S on a square lattice within the framework of Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. Based on a continuum description, we show that vortices are stable topological excitations in the disordered state of quantum antiferromagnets. Furthermore, we argue that vortices can be divided into two kinds: the first kind always carries zero angular momentum and are bosons, whereas the second kind carries angular momentum S under favourable conditions and are fermions if S is half-integer. A plausible consequence of our results relating to the RVB theories of High-Tc superconductors is pointed out. PACS Nos, 75.10.Jm, 75.30.Ds, 79.60.-i Typeset using REVTEX

Edge states in Schwinger-boson mean-field theory of low-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets.

Recently there has been much interest in the study of finite one-dimensional quantum spin chains following the discovery of fractional S = —, ' spin states localized at the ends of S = 1 spin chains. ' In a recent paper, we showed numerically that the S = —, ' spin states can be understood within the framework of the Schwinger-boson mean-field theory (SBMFT) for the Heisenberg model. ' In this ...

Topological spin excitations of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions

In this paper we discuss the construction and the dynamics of vortex-like topological spin excitations in the Schwinger-boson description of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The topological spin excitations are Dirac fermions (with gap) when spin value S is a half-integer. Experimental and theoretical implications of these excitations are being investigated. 71.10.Fd,75.10.Jm,75.4...

Quantum phase transitions of antiferromagnets and the cuprate superconductors

I begin with a proposed global phase diagram of the cuprate superconductors as a function of carrier concentration, magnetic field, and temperature, and highlight its connection to numerous recent experiments. The phase diagram is then used as a point of departure for a pedagogical review of various quantum phases and phase transitions of insulators, superconductors, and metals. The bond operat...

Mechanism of spin and charge separation in one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets.

We reconsider the problem of separation of spin and charge in one dimensional quantum antiferromagnets. We show that spin and charge separation in one dimensional strongly correlated systems cannot be described by the slave boson or fermion representation within any perturbative treatment of the interactions between the slave holons and slave spinons. The constraint of single occupancy must be ...

Ja n 19 99 On the self - consistent spin - wave theory of layered Heisenberg magnets

The versions of the self-consistent spin-wave theories (SSWT) of two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg ferro-and antiferromagnets with a weak inter-layer coupling and/or magnetic anisotropy, that are based on the non-linear Dyson-Maleev, Schwinger, and combined boson-pseudofermion representations , are analyzed. Analytical results for the temperature dependences of (sublattice) magnetization and shor...
